Behind the Story: How a Hospital Stay Turned Into a Children’s Book

Every book has an origin story, and ours are usually less tidy than people expect. A while back, I wrote a longer piece on Medium about how a friend’s hospital stay — and my own cat’s odd habit of showing up right when she was needed — ended up pushing me to write my very first children’s book.

I won’t repeat the whole story here, but the short version is that inspiration for a children’s book rarely arrives in a straight line. It usually comes from something ordinary — a worried afternoon, a cat curled up in exactly the right spot — that only looks like the beginning of a book after the fact.

If you’d like the full account, you can read it on Medium. And if you enjoy this kind of behind-the-scenes writing, we’ll share more of these essays here from time to time.
